Treasury Targets International Crime

The U.S. Department
of the Treasury sanctioned nine international gangsters Thursday in an effort to
block their criminal organizations, the Brothers’ Circle and the Yakuza, from
the global financial system.
The sanctions freeze
any U.S. assets of the Kenichi Shinoda, the boss of Japan’s largest Yakuza
gang.
individuals and
effectively bar U.S. citizens and companies from doing business with
them.
Seven of the
designated men are high-level members and associates of the Brothers’ Circle, a
multi-ethnic criminal organization rooted largely in former Soviet states in
Eurasia. The other two are leaders of the largest group within the Japanese
Yakuza,
